Why doesn’t my business show up on Google or ChatGPT? 7 causes and how to fix them
Updated: · Published:
A business fails to show up on Google or ChatGPT almost always for one of seven causes: no URL per service and metro area, pages that don’t answer what people ask, an incomplete Google Business Profile, a site that blocks or can’t be read by AI bots, no reviews or mentions off-site, no Bing indexing, or being too new to have been crawled.
"I google my own business and my competitor shows up first" is the first thing owners tell us. Since 2025 there is a second line: "I asked ChatGPT to recommend a business like mine and it didn’t know I exist." Both have the same root causes. Here are the seven we see over and over with US small businesses, how to spot each in five minutes, and how fast it can be fixed. No hype: bots crawl in 2 to 4 weeks and first movements show in 30 to 60 days.
Cause 1: no URL per service and metro area
If your site is one page with "services" in a menu, Google does not know which search to show it for. People search "kitchen remodel Chula Vista", not "welcome to our company". Each service + area needs its own page with its own headline, direct answer and call or message button. How to spot it: type "site:yourdomain.com" into Google and count the pages; if it is one or two, this is it.
Cause 2: the page doesn’t answer what people ask
Most pages talk about the company ("over 20 years of experience") instead of answering the customer’s question ("how much does a bathroom remodel cost?"). Google and AI assistants reward the direct answer: 40 to 60 words at the top of each section, with a number. Without it there is nothing to cite. How to spot it: read your page and ask whether it answers "how much", "how long" and "what’s included" without the customer having to call.
Cause 3: the Google Business Profile is incomplete or abandoned
For local searches the profile weighs as much as the site: right category, hours, recent photos, services listed, posts, and answered reviews. A profile with no activity for a year tells Google the business may be gone. How to spot it: search your business by name and see whether the profile appears on the right, complete, with reviews answered.
Cause 4: the site is slow, JavaScript-only, or blocks AI bots
AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript: if your content is painted by scripts, the page is empty for ChatGPT or Perplexity. And many sites ship a robots.txt that blocks GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot without the owner knowing. How to spot it: open yourdomain.com/robots.txt and look for those names next to "Disallow"; then run PageSpeed Insights (LCP under 2.5 seconds is the target).
Cause 5: no reviews with context and no mentions off-site
AI assistants recommend businesses other people mention: reviews that name the service and city ("we hired them for our wedding in San Diego"), relevant directories, articles, profiles, even forum comments. Brands with few mentions simply do not exist for AI. How to spot it: search your business name in quotes and count the results that are not your own site.
Cause 6: not in Bing, no structured data
ChatGPT’s search uses Bing’s index; if you never registered the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, you do not exist for ChatGPT even if Google shows you. And without structured data (Organization, Services, FAQ) engines have to guess who you are, where you are and what you sell. How to spot it: search your business on bing.com; if it is not there, this is it.
Cause 7: it is too new (or you just fixed it)
After publishing or fixing a site, Google and AI bots take 2 to 4 weeks to crawl it fully, and the first ranking movements show in 30 to 60 days. Our Alba Roja case moved from position 9 to 6 in three weeks with everything above resolved, and that was fast. Anyone promising "page one in a week" is lying. How to spot it: in Search Console, check the last crawl date of your main pages.
The 7 causes in one table: how to spot them and how long the fix takes
| Cause | How to spot it in 5 minutes | How it is fixed | Time to effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| No URL per service and area | "site:yourdomain.com" on Google | One page per intent with headline and direct answer | 30–60 days |
| Doesn’t answer what people ask | Read the page: does it say how much and how long? | Rewrite with a 40–60 word answer and FAQ | 30–60 days |
| Google Business Profile incomplete | Search the business by name | Complete it, post, answer reviews weekly | 2–4 weeks |
| Slow, JavaScript-only or blocking AI bots | robots.txt and PageSpeed Insights | Static HTML, bot permissions, optimized images | 2–4 weeks (crawl) |
| No reviews or off-site mentions | Search the name in quotes | Ask for reviews with context, directories, articles, profiles | 1–3 months |
| Not in Bing / no structured data | Search on bing.com | Bing Webmaster + IndexNow, JSON-LD for Organization and Services | 2–4 weeks |
| Too new | Crawl date in Search Console | Wait with a correct sitemap and new content every month | 2–4 weeks crawl; 30–60 days movement |
Traffic from ChatGPT grew 206 % in a year and an AI visitor converts 4.4× more. In the Alba Roja case, ChatGPT visitors stay 52 seconds versus 11 for everyone else.
A note for bilingual businesses
Over 40 million people in the US speak Spanish at home, and they search in Spanish. A translation widget does not create Spanish pages Google can rank or ChatGPT can cite; separate Spanish URLs with their own search terms and reciprocal hreflang do. If half your customers speak Spanish and your site only speaks English, that is an eighth cause worth fixing.
What to do first
In this order, because each step makes the next one worth more: (1) allow AI bots and register the site in Search Console and Bing — free, one afternoon; (2) complete and activate the Google Business Profile; (3) build one URL per service and area with a direct answer and structured data; (4) start collecting reviews with context and earning mentions; (5) measure monthly with an AI Traffic channel in GA4 and a log of prompts asked to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Without measurement you will not know what worked.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn’t my business show up on Google?
Almost always a combination of: one URL for every service, copy that does not answer what people ask, an incomplete Google Business Profile, a slow site or one that blocks crawlers, and few reviews or mentions off-site. A 5-minute check of Search Console (or its absence) tells you which one weighs most in your case.
How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my business?
Allow AI bots in robots.txt, register the site in Bing (ChatGPT uses its index), answer each question in 40 to 60 words with structured data, and earn reviews and mentions off-site. It is built in weeks and measured by the visits arriving from ChatGPT in GA4; there is no trick or shortcut.
How long until I see results?
Bots crawl a new or fixed site in 2 to 4 weeks; the first Google movements show in 30 to 60 days and ChatGPT or Perplexity citations within 1 to 3 months. Our Alba Roja case went from position 9 to 6 in three weeks. Distrust anyone promising page one in a week.
Do I need a new site or can mine be fixed?
Depends on the base: if the site has URLs that already bring some traffic and usable copy, a redesign with a 301 map fixes it from $900 USD; if it is one page in a closed builder, a new site from $1,200 makes more sense. In the free check we tell you which, with data.
